Observation Narrative
This is one of the largest and therefore significant seasonal ponds in the valley. The pond appeared to have been nearly dry in mid-summer, but on this date, following late summer rains, water was about 40 cm deep. The inlet vernal/seasonal stream channel appears to contribute nutrient bearing waters to the pond. Historically, Lachnanthes caroliniana occurred here, but is no longer present, possibly because of cessation of fires or nutrient enrichment. Plot located in west-central part of pond.
Chris Clampitt reported these additional species in 1988: Lysimachia hybrida, Galium sp., Ilex verticillata and Acer rubrum.
